The head of the Infectious Diseases department at Valencia General Hospital, Miguel García Deltoro, has been honored with the Jaume I Award of Vila de Llíria 2026, during an institutional ceremony held last Friday.

The award, granted by the Llíria City Council, recognizes García Deltoro's work as a benchmark in the field of medicine, highlighting his commitment to knowledge and effort. Alongside him, the singer-songwriter Maria Faubel Portolés, Applied Linguistics professor Carmen Pérez Sabater, Dr. José Miguel Zaragozá García from Doctor Peset Hospital, and young scientist Lluís Miquel Lis López also received the award.
García Deltoro, a specialist in Internal Medicine and Doctor of Medicine, is the principal investigator of the Infectious Diseases group at the Research Foundation of the General University Hospital of Valencia (FIHGUV). His extensive healthcare and scientific career has earned him various awards, but this one holds special significance as he receives it from his native land.
During the ceremony, García Deltoro highlighted recent medical advancements, such as the cure for hepatitis C with short-term treatments and the research of new drugs through clinical trials. He also emphasized the importance of the doctor-patient relationship, recalling the diagnostic capabilities of the physicians from his childhood through clinical examination.
He expressed an emotional thank you to his family, especially his parents, and to his fellow citizens of Llíria, stating that he will always keep the award in his heart. The mayor, Paco Gorrea, emphasized that these awards serve as an encouragement for society, as talent dedicated to the community fosters progress.
