The government team of Castellón, led by Begoña Carrasco, has carried out a new initiative in Constitution Square aiming to renaturalize and improve the sustainability of the urban environment. The work involved planting 200 shrub species in the existing flowerbeds, complementing the already established trees.
The Councilor for Environment and Sustainable Development, Gonzalo Romero, emphasized the goal to “fill squares and neighborhoods with life, improve the quality of life for Castellón residents, and ensure our city shines as it deserves.” He highlighted that each new planting is part of a continuous commitment to a more sustainable, friendly city prepared for high temperatures.
The new shrub plants will add more volume to the garden areas and provide a greener, more natural appearance to the square. The selected species are adapted to the climatic conditions of Castellón and have already been successfully used in previous projects, such as those in the Low Emission Zone.
Additionally, a surface drip irrigation system has been installed to optimize water consumption, and a layer of shredded pruning waste has been spread to conserve soil moisture and improve the appearance of the flowerbeds.
This intervention is part of the municipal strategy for renaturalization and climate change adaptation, which since 2023 has led to the planting of 2,145 trees in urban areas. This policy is part of the Local Action Plan of the Urban Agenda, which aims to reduce the effects of climate change and move towards a healthier urban model.
The project Castelló Naturalesa en Xarxa (Castellón Nature Network), funded by European funds, includes the creation of climate oases in educational centers and interventions in various public spaces. Furthermore, the Integrated Action Plan foresees the transformation of Censal Park into a large urban forest.
