Burriana has commemorated its 50th anniversary of the Bull Commission with a display of institutional and festive events that brought together numerous regional and provincial authorities in the capital of la Plana Baixa. The day began with the launch of 50 firecrackers in the Plaza Mayor, followed by an official reception at the City Hall for the commission members.
Attending authorities included the president of the Diputación de Castellón, Marta Barrachina; the Vice President and Minister of Environment, Vicente Martínez Mus; the Minister of Emergencies and Interior, Juan Carlos Valderrama; the regional secretary of Agriculture, Vicente Tejedo Tormo; the mayor of Xilxes, Ismael Minguet; and the mayoress of Almassora, Maria Tormo, among other municipal and provincial representatives.
Subsequently, an imposing sculpture by renowned local artist Juan Poré was unveiled on Carrer la Tanda, in front of the old corrals of La Mercè. The work, depicting a charging bull, symbolizes strength, bravery, and tradition, measuring nearly 3 meters in length and weighing 1,000 kg. The artist described the piece as «a representation of five decades of effort, tradition, and shared experiences».
The celebration continued with an urban photographic exhibition of 28 panels reviewing half a century of bullfighting tradition in the town, installed in the Plaza Mayor and Carrer la Tanda. A historical parade through the old town also took place with members of the Bull Commission.
An emotional minute of silence was observed in memory of the Burriana bullfighting surgeon Gustavo Traver Martínez, a pioneer in the safety and protection of bullfighting events and promoter of the mobile medical unit in Burriana.
The highlight of the day was the exhibition of the commemorative bull ‘Tutor’, from the Garcigrande ranch, sponsored by the Burriana City Council to celebrate this 50th anniversary.
The mayor of Burriana, Jorge Monferrer, emphasized that the tribute is «fair and deserved» for an entity «that is part of our history and bullfighting DNA», assuring that the bullfighting sentiment will remain alive in the city. The Councilor for Festivals, Paloma Boix, highlighted the work done to offer surprises such as the sculpture and the bull sponsorship. For her part, the president of the Diputación, Marta Barrachina, praised Burriana's bullfighting tradition and the commitment of the Bull Commission to keeping this tradition alive.
