The Orihuela City Council is finalizing the actions and technical checks so that the students of the CEIP Virgen de la Puerta can begin the school year this Wednesday at their own center. This measure will avoid relocation to other schools in the municipality and the daily commutes for families.
The mayor, Pepe Vegara, accompanied by the councilors for Education, Vicente Pina, and Urban Planning, Matías Ruiz, visited the center to inform families directly about the situation, the actions carried out, and the steps being taken.
The Councilor for Education, Vicente Pina, recalled that the City Council has been working for months on the situation of the center, with an external study and a second municipal technical report. These documents allowed for the determination of needs before the start of the course, and municipal brigades have been working throughout August to address them.
Pina pointed out that these actions are part of a broader process to ensure educational continuity while a definitive solution is sought for a center that has been under study for years. The objective is for the children to remain in their school with all safety conditions and educational normality.
The Councilor for Urban Planning, Matías Ruiz, detailed that urgent repairs have been carried out, such as the sanitation and reinforcement of pillars with cracks or exposed rebar, following technical indications and using specific materials. These works continued until this Monday.
The works are aimed at enabling the provisional occupation of the school while prefabricated classrooms are installed. The City Council has insisted that these are not the definitive solution, but rather address immediate needs while the planned project is developed.
Mayor Pepe Vegara conveyed to the families the priority of ensuring the safety and stability of the educational community, avoiding relocations that would disrupt the students' daily lives.
In parallel, the City Council is working on the provisional solution of prefabricated classrooms in the San Isidro neighborhood. An offer has been made for land owned by Sareb, with credit approved by the Municipal Plenary, for its acquisition and conditioning.
The definitive solution, shared with the Conselleria de Educación, is the construction of a new CEIP Virgen de la Puerta, as the current one must be demolished. The summer actions respond to technical indications to be able to temporarily start the course at the current center.
The City Council will continue coordinating with technical services and the educational administration to complete the necessary checks before the start of the course, with the priority that students begin classes at their usual center.
