Since its creation in 2001, sponsored by Professor Joaquín Andreu, the institute has developed over 1,550 research projects, with a turnover close to 40 million euros. These initiatives have connected scientific knowledge with societal and territorial needs, based on the excellence of its research staff and the development of solutions to improve water management, protect ecosystems, and address environmental risks.
The director of IIAMA-UPV, Javier Paredes Arquiola, states that "our research forms a crucible of the environment where problems are studied in a multidisciplinary way". The scientific team, comprising researchers of recognized national and international prestige, has published 1,327 articles in scientific journals, participated in 2,164 conferences, and received 62 awards, reflecting the recognition of their work.
The diversity of the teams allows for addressing the hydrological cycle from different disciplines, connecting environmental, technological, and management dimensions. With over 70 research lines, they cover water quality and microbial biodiversity, forest management, ecosystem sustainability, atmospheric remote sensing, and nature-based solutions, among others. The recent incorporation of researchers such as Luis Guanter and María Val has provided a key reinforcement to the institute's environmental dimension.
IIAMA also serves as the official headquarters of the Spanish Group of the International Association of Hydrogeologists, strengthening its participation in scientific and professional networks. Collaboration with public administrations and companies is another fundamental pillar, providing knowledge and tools for decision-making and the incorporation of scientific results into professional practice. This transfer activity includes nine patents, one spin-off, and two company chairs.
“"Public-private collaboration also favors the exchange of experience between scientific teams and the agents who face these challenges daily."
On its 25th anniversary, IIAMA recognizes the contribution of all individuals, administrations, companies, and entities that have made its trajectory possible and renews its commitment to research serving society. "Our experience forms the basis for continuing to drive excellent research, connected with the needs of the environment and capable of offering solutions to present and future challenges in water and the environment," concludes Javier Paredes.
