A Civil War shelter has been discovered in El Toro's Plaza del Jariz (Alto Palancia) during the renovation of the main street.

The works, which began last April and are funded by the Diputación de Castellón, have revealed an underground access point that served as a refuge for residents during the Civil War. The town's mayor, José Arenes, described the find as "another vestige of our history".
The El Toro City Council has already registered this access and intends to make it available for public visits "as soon as funds are available". Meanwhile, the street renovation works continue.
The mayor highlighted the project's positive impact, stating it "remodels the main access to the town and humanizes it", aiming to transform it into a space for meeting and coexistence. Arenes also noted the population increase during the summer months, now exceeding 300 inhabitants, and the daily effort to fill the municipality with life year-round.
