The urban plan designates a total area of 16,834 square meters, of which 7,187 will be allocated to public facilities for the cemetery's expansion. An additional 2,603 square meters will be reserved for the road network and parking areas, while 7,009 square meters will be for private facilities for complementary funeral uses.
This land reservation, representing an approximate increase of 20% to 25% of the current area, will accommodate new burials planned for the next two decades, in compliance with Decree 39/2005 of the Generalitat Valenciana. Sandra Sánchez, the Councilor for Cemeteries, emphasized that the action will anticipate the needs of a growing city and ensure an essential municipal service.
The development will include paving new roads, creating parking and sidewalks, installing public lighting, and conditioning open spaces, as well as networks for electricity, potable water, irrigation, fire protection, and sanitation.
The plan has favorable environmental reports and received no objections during the public exhibition period. The potential impact of the future duplication of the N-332 highway has been considered, respecting any limitations that may arise from this project.
This approval complements actions already undertaken since 2022, which have added 756 new niches to the municipal cemetery. However, long-term planning is necessary to meet Torrevieja's future needs.
