The Ontinyent City Council has presented data confirming improvements in selective waste collection, with 93% of citizens actively participating in the new door-to-door system, which has led to a 67% reduction in residual waste and increased collection of other materials.

In the first four months of operation of the new door-to-door selective waste collection system, Ontinyent has recorded a 67% reduction in residual waste compared to August 2025. Furthermore, the collection of light packaging has increased by 112%, paper and cardboard by 42%, and glass by 32%.
The mayor of Ontinyent, Jorge Rodríguez, and the Councilor for Sustainability, Sayo Gandia, presented these figures, highlighting citizen involvement exceeding 93%. They explained that the quality of waste separation is confirmed in the treatment processes, and 2.5 million kilograms destined for residual waste have been reduced.
The comparison for August, which includes the Moors and Christians festivities, shows a reduction in residual waste from 1,054,070 kg to 345,400 kg. Light packaging collection grew from 59,280 to 125,500 kg, while 273,640 kg of organic matter were collected, a fraction not previously separated. Paper and cardboard collection rose from 59,380 to 84,500 kg, and glass from 73,900 to 97,891 kg.
Councilor Sayo Gandia emphasized that citizens have adapted to the new system, improving the urban landscape with the removal of containers. Collection points for sanitary textiles have been expanded, and an adapted service for the elderly or disabled has been implemented.
Francisco Amor, a technician from Fovasa, highlighted the organizational complexity of the service, which required expanding the human team and deploying nine trucks. He positively assessed the results, comparing them to Northern European countries and congratulating citizens on their effective recycling efforts.
