September 9th is not just any date. This day symbolizes the nine months of gestation and invites us to reflect and act regarding Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), which includes the well-known Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). The goal is to remember the importance of caring for health from the very first moment of life.
This message is a call to all of society, not just expectant mothers. Partners, families, friends, the social environment, and even the hospitality industry play a key role. Protecting pregnancy is a shared responsibility.
FASD encompasses a range of physical, cognitive, learning, and behavioral impairments that can affect a child for life as a consequence of alcohol consumption during gestation. It is often an invisible reality, but it is 100% preventable.
There is no amount of alcohol considered "safe" during pregnancy, nor is there a time during pregnancy when there is no risk. Any type of alcohol crosses the placenta and reaches the baby directly. The best way to help a pregnant woman is to support her decision not to consume alcohol, offering healthy alternatives and a non-judgmental environment.
When we create alcohol-free environments and support pregnant women, we ensure that every baby has the best possible start in life. Prevention is the only effective tool against FASD, and it is within our reach.
This September 9th, share this message on your social networks and join the campaign: During pregnancy, zero alcohol. For their health and their future.
