Since January, a total of 76 specimens have been captured in the 11 cages installed in the capital of La Plana. This action is part of a wild boar control device deployed by the regional administration in the municipality of Castelló and the rest of the province, which currently has 31 trap cages and has recorded 228 captures since the work began.
The Councilor for Environment, Gonzalo Romero, highlighted that the overpopulation of wild boars poses a serious problem for road safety on rural roads and paths, as well as for damage to agricultural properties. He added that the installation of new cages addresses a concern of the residents of La Marjalería, especially in summer.
The Director General of Natural and Animal Environment, Luis Gomis, pointed out that the Generalitat is reinforcing the control of wild boar populations in agricultural and peri-urban areas to reduce their density and prevent problems. He emphasized the importance of prevention and coordination with local councils to act in areas with the highest presence.
The location of the trap cages is based on prior monitoring using camera trapping techniques, which has allowed for the study of wild boar movements and concentrations to optimize the effectiveness of the capture device and resources.
The device extends to other municipalities such as Burriana, Vila-real, Alquerías del Niño Perdido, Almassora, and Benicàssim, as well as parts of Onda, Cabanes, and Borriol. The objective is to minimize risks to animal health, including African swine fever, and maintain populations compatible with ecosystem conservation, agricultural activity, and public safety.
