Onda's Plaza España opened its doors this afternoon after a complete renovation that turns it into a central hub for residents. The project has revitalized one of the city's most iconic spaces, enhancing its sustainability and accessibility. The main fountain now features a replica of the historic La Panderola train, a tribute to local memory.
With an investment close to three million euros, partially funded by European funds, the square boasts new paving, a significant increase in trees and vegetation, shaded areas, children's play zones, and ornamental elements. The renovation also improved the connection with the Municipal Market.
“"Plaza España is at the heart of generations of Ondenses, and we had the enormous responsibility of creating a project worthy of it. Today, we return to the residents a square with soul, designed for living, meeting, and creating new memories; a square that looks to the future without renouncing our history, our ceramics, and our roots."
La Panderola, a symbol of Onda's economic and social development, regains its place in the ornamental fountain, recalling its former station. Local identity is further emphasized with ceramic finishes from local companies and large-format ceramic tomatoes crafted by ceramist Joana Segura, honoring local produce and farmers.
The square has been designed as an urban climate refuge, featuring increased vegetation, shaded areas, and a cooling system in the pergola to ensure year-round comfort. Accessibility has been significantly improved with the leveling of the space and the installation of an elevator in the underground parking.
The surroundings of the Municipal Market have also been renovated with new sidewalks and paving, better integrating the market into the square. During the construction, the city council provided financial aid to affected businesses, including a subsidy to the Municipal Market Association. Additionally, the market will showcase two large ceramic murals created by users of the El Molí Occupational Center.
The Plaza España renovation is part of the ‘Onda RecONecta’ plan, which has secured 6.4 million euros in European Next Generation EU funds. Mayor Carmina Ballester thanked the community for their collaboration and invited everyone to enjoy and care for the new space.
The inauguration featured family-friendly activities, including a parade, storytelling, and a photo booth where La Panderola was a central point for pictures.
