The solidarity event 'Less Mines, More Flowers', recently held in Dénia, has highlighted the Marina Alta's deep empathy for the Sahrawi people, particularly recalling the hosting of children during the 'Vacances en Pau' (Holidays in Peace) program in the 90s. The event, organized by the NGO We Through The Wall in collaboration with Pitimini Flowers, aimed to bring visibility to an often-silenced humanitarian crisis.
Lupe Miñana from Pitimini Flowers donated all her floral arrangements to support the cause, a gesture symbolizing the contrast between landmines and the hope represented by flowers. This initiative seeks to raise awareness about the situation of the approximately 173,000 inhabitants of the Sahrawi refugee camps in Tindouf, established 50 years ago.
The event was attended by the Sahrawi delegate in the Valencian Community, Yacub El Mami, and human rights expert lawyer Isidora J. Ramírez Garmendia. Both figures explained the harsh reality and precarious living conditions of Sahrawi exiles.
As part of the event, the documentary 'Between Sand an Sky: Children of the Exile' was screened, and a photographic exhibition showcased the consequences of the wall and landmines in the Western Sahara desert. The funds raised will be fully allocated to We Through The Wall's humanitarian projects in the camps.
