The flames, initially vegetation, were quickly reclassified as forest fires. The situation has caused concern among residents, as the fire is visible from Morella and the smell of burning reaches the neighboring region of Els Ports. Responders are working intensely to prevent the situation from worsening.
According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the cause of the fire was a dry storm that left little precipitation but caused four lightning strikes to hit the ground within a radius of about 10 kilometers around Catí. This day was classified as having an extreme fire risk.
The firefighting deployment has been expanded with nine ground units and three helicopter-transported units from the Generalitat's Forest Service, along with six regional air resources. On the part of the Diputación de Castellón Firefighters, there are four air resources, four ground crews, a command unit, and two forest coordinators.
Possible rainfall could aid firefighting efforts, but the intensity of the flames is currently strong.
