The project, developed within the framework of the Alcoy Urban Sandbox and promoted by LORIOT Verso in collaboration with SETRA, goes beyond simple sensor deployment. The initiative leverages IoT (Internet of Things) technology to transform real-time environmental data into operational decisions for forest managers and accessible information for visitors.
The solution processes variables such as temperature, humidity, wind, and precipitation, transmitted via Alcoy's LoRaWAN infrastructure. This data allows for the calculation of a dry vegetation material flammability indicator, helping forest rangers identify areas with a high ignition risk and optimize preventive resources.
As a social innovation, a wooden information totem has been installed around Font Roja, translating complex metrics into a visual risk alert system. Additionally, a QR code allows visitors to access an interactive digital panel to check real-time ground conditions, learn safety rules, and contact emergency services.
The mayor of Alcoy, Toni Francés, highlighted that the project reflects the purpose of the Urban Sandbox, enabling innovative companies to test solutions under real conditions for concrete benefits. He emphasized the importance of protecting the natural environment against climate change and the initiative's international projection.
Robin Wulfes, project manager for LORIOT, explained that the success lies in transforming raw environmental data into useful information for the administration and citizens, creating a scalable and adaptable model. He positively valued the collaboration with the City Council through the Urban Sandbox.
The initiative has an estimated budget of 16,800 euros, financed by LORIOT, and will have a maximum duration of one and a half years. In addition to prevention, a valuable historical environmental database will be generated to refine future predictive models.
The Alcoy Urban Sandbox involves 21 affiliated entities and 14 ongoing projects, covering areas such as artificial intelligence, mobility, and sustainability, consolidating the city as a public-private collaboration ecosystem.
