The tasks for consolidation, access improvement, and valorization of the El Castellar archaeological site in Alcoy are progressing favorably. The works are expected to conclude before the end of October, provided there are no adverse weather phenomena or other unforeseen circumstances affecting the operations.
The Mayor of Alcoy, Toni Francés, and the Councilor for Cultural Heritage, Lorena Zamorano, visited the site today to personally observe the project's evolution. These efforts aim to halt the deterioration of the archaeological structures, enhance access routes, and facilitate visits to this significant historical location.
El Castellar, a hilltop fortified settlement of Andalusian origin dating from the late 9th to the mid-11th century, is designated as a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC). The intervention seeks to preserve the existing remains and improve the interpretation and dissemination of the site for greater public understanding of this heritage.
The total investment for this project amounts to 304,110.59 euros. The Ministry of Education, Culture, and Sport contributes 152,055.29 euros, while the Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda finances 131,762.72 euros. The municipal contribution is 20,292.58 euros, meaning that over 93% of the total cost is covered by external funding.
Once the works are completed, El Castellar will host the final activity of the 12th edition of the program «10 excursions around Alcoy and its historical and archaeological heritage». This excursion, organized by the Department of Cultural Heritage and the Camilo Visedo Moltó Municipal Archaeological Museum, in collaboration with the Alcoià Centre for Historical and Archaeological Studies (CAEHA), is scheduled for Sunday, November 29th. The route will start at 8:30 AM from Al-Azraq square, covering 7 kilometers with an accumulated elevation gain of 600 meters and rated as high difficulty.
