The I 'Uniendo Faros' Swim, organized for the 125th anniversary of the Port of Alicante's Board of Works and Services, concluded with significant participation and a sporting day focused on the sea and the swimmers' spirit of overcoming challenges.
Adverse weather and sea conditions led to the official cancellation of the 20-kilometer race, the main challenge designed to link the lighthouses of Santa Pola and Cabo de las Huertas. However, swimmer Pau Roure Grigelmo, from the L’Hospitalet Swimming Club, decided to continue the challenge and completed the distance individually.
The decision to cancel the 20K competition was made to ensure participant safety given the unfavorable maritime conditions.
The 10K, 5K, 2.5K, and 1K races proceeded without incident, allowing a large number of swimmers to participate in this sports initiative linked to the port's 125th-anniversary celebration.
In the men's 10-kilometer category, Abraham Castillo took gold, followed by Joseba Mateos (silver) and Antonio Miguel Eznarriaga (bronze). Melanie Marín won the women's race, with Carla Domenech in second place and Mónica Cardete third.
These various distances brought together swimmers of different levels and ages, contributing to a grand sporting celebration centered around the sea and the port of Alicante.
The swim was distinguished by its route, framing the Bay of Alicante with the lighthouses of Santa Pola and Cabo de las Huertas, key elements of the maritime landscape and heritage of the province.
The initiative aims to highlight Alicante's connection with the Mediterranean and strengthen the bond between the port and the local community.
The awards ceremony was led by the president of the Port Authority of Alicante, Luis Rodríguez, who also participated in the 5K race. He was joined by the deputy mayor and councilor for Sports of Alicante City Council, Manuel Villar, and the Director of Competition Teams at The Ocean Race, Carla Nebreda, as well as local swimmer Jorge Crivillés.
