The deadline for submitting objections to the Monnegre River green corridor project, which aims to transform the area into a 20-kilometer citizen axis, ends today. The Generalitat's proposal, with a budget of 15 million euros, has received nine improvements from Esquerra Unida-Unides Podem in El Campello.
The party calls for the protection of the historical hydraulic system of l'Horta d'Alacant, demanding oversight from the University of Alicante (UA) or academic entities to prevent the destruction of elements such as irrigation channels, dams, or mills by the heavy machinery required for clearing work. It also requests that actions near the weirs and the Les Fontetes Interpretation Center be low-impact to highlight this heritage, which is protected as a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC).
Regarding the ecosystem, the need for comprehensive control of invasive species present in the river's course and its tributaries has been emphasized. Furthermore, the planting of native trees along the connecting paths between infrastructures is required, and these paths should remain unpaved, suitable for pedestrians and cyclists, to respect the natural environment.
EU-UP has also stressed the importance of respecting the breeding seasons of birds nesting in the river, such as the Trumpeter Finch or the European Pied Flycatcher, to avoid disturbances that could lead to nest abandonment or chick mortality. Concerning drainage systems, it is proposed that they be natural at access points, using bioengineering techniques like green ditches or natural culverts, instead of concrete channels, to prevent erosion caused by heavy rainfall or floods.
Finally, the political group has requested the participation of local councils, scientific entities, and associations in monitoring the project. The importance of establishing a periodic review and maintenance plan for the conservation of infrastructures has also been highlighted. Regarding the planned footbridge, it is suggested that it be made of integrated wood and have a low impact, as the affected section is included in the Valencian Community's Catalog of Wetlands.
