The DEGLUTECH initiative, led by Labinderb in collaboration with Multi3DPrint, the Plastic Technology Institute (AIMPLAS), the Health and Biomedical Research Institute of Alicante (ISABIAL), and the Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH), has developed a new generation of nutraceutical products. These products, in the form of orally disintegrating films, dissolve directly in the mouth, eliminating the need for water and facilitating the administration of essential nutrients and bioactive compounds.
This technological advancement aims to improve the quality of life for the elderly and patients with neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's, who often suffer from dysphagia. Swallowing difficulties affect approximately 8% of the Spanish population and can compromise nutrition and treatment adherence.
Personalized manufacturing using 3D printing is one of the project's most innovative aspects. This technology allows for the adjustment of product composition, dosage, size, and shape to the specific needs of each patient, enhancing the efficiency and reproducibility of the formats.
The project also incorporates bioactive ingredients with functional properties aimed at preventing age-related issues, such as bone health or sleep quality, promoting healthier aging. Currently, the consortium is working on the formulation and validation of these new products and optimizing manufacturing processes.
The initiative is funded by the European Union through the FEDER Comunitat Valenciana program and aligns with the conclusions of the Specialized Strategic Innovation Committee (CEIE) in Agri-food and the Valencian Community's Smart Specialization Strategy (S3).
