The Eve, one of the most anticipated events for thousands of Elche residents, marks the beginning of the Mystery Play's celebrations. In this performance, a young woman embodies Mary, expressing her sorrow over the death of the Son of God and her desire to be reunited with him. This wish is accepted, leading to the scene where the Virgin Mary bids farewell to the apostles.
During the performance, Mary dies under the protection of the apostles, while chants fill each passage. The atmosphere, laden with symbolism and silence, invites devotion and respect for the story. The Eve marks the first act of the Mystery Play, a festival that unites the community through emotion and faith.
The celebration does not end here. Thousands of Elche residents will keep vigil over the body of the Virgin of the Assumption and participate in the Nit de la Roà, processing through the streets. Saturday, August 15th, will be the day of the main festival.
This year marks twenty-five years since the Mystery Play of Elche was declared Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO, being the first Spanish performance to receive such a distinction. This work, with an antiquity of 500 years, is cherished by the entire city of Elche and passed down through generations, maintaining its essence despite annual challenges.
