With the opening address of the patron saint festivities imminent, Elche is working against the clock on various urban construction projects, highlighting two crucial points in the heart of the city: the area around the Santa María basilica and the Central Market. Workers are rushing to meet deadlines to ensure full functionality of access routes during the festive week.
At the Central Market, which will also host dining activities, three shade trees have already been planted. The plan is for the square in front of the City Hall, Menéndez Pelayo, to be completely clear before August 7th. Additionally, efforts are being made to prepare access points for the festive week, including the potential reinstallation of Joan Castejón's sculpture, the removal of which sparked heritage controversy.
The other priority work area is the Plaza del Congreso Eucarístico, vital for the moments preceding the performance of the Misteri d'Elx. Access to the basilica must be clear before the 7th. Ramps have been installed in the hospitality area and at the Sacristy door, and the surroundings of the Bar Association are being prepared to facilitate passage to the temple, where barriers will be removed.
Currently, in the Traspalacio area, work is underway for the installation of the irrigation system for future trees and a fountain. The demolition of concrete in this area will not take place until after the festivities, approximately between August 17th and 18th.
