The mayor of Elche, Pablo Ruz, accompanied by councilors Claudio Guilabert and Inma Mora, as well as the Queens and Maids of Honor of the Festivities, visited the Hort de la Coronela for the harvest of tagete flowers. These will be thrown during the Battle of Flowers, one of the central events of the patron saint festivities, organized by the Federación Gestora de Festejos Populares.
This year, the Elche municipality has cultivated 25,000 tagete seeds, distributed among the municipal gardens of Coronela, Malena, Pontos, and Dins. Each plant yields approximately 10 flowers, allowing for an initial harvest of 125,000 units, to which another 125,000 will be added on the day of the celebration to ensure their freshness.
Pablo Ruz has invited citizens to participate in this event: "We call all the people of Elche on the 12th to the great Battle of Flowers, which for 3 years has been supplied by tagetes planted in the municipal gardens, and to enjoy the throwing of 250,000 flowers, a demonstration of Elche's spirit and adrenaline," stated the mayor, who also expressed the intention to expand the number of gardens dedicated to cultivating these tagetes.
The Major Queen, Laura Rodrigo, and the Minor Queen, Aroa Durá, have expressed their excitement for the harvest of these flowers, anticipating one of the "most beautiful" Battles of Flowers.
The tagetes are planted in early June to take advantage of the summer light. Once harvested, the flowers are stored in conditioned chambers until their use in the Battle of Flowers.
