The expansion plan, unveiled today in Torrevieja, involves a 75% increase in built area, adding 30,000 m² to the facility. This enhancement will provide 457 beds, 150 new outpatient consultations, and the recruitment of 667 healthcare professionals.
The President of the Generalitat, Juanfran Pérez Llorca, explained that the new facilities will be located on an adjacent 11,492 m² plot ceded by the Torrevieja city council. This land transfer will allow the facility to adapt to current and future healthcare needs, serving a population exceeding 225,000 residents and addressing the summer tourist influx.
Pérez Llorca described the project as 'ambitious,' asserting it will build 'the hospital that citizens deserve' across the ten municipalities served by the center. He criticized previous 'fake' projects lacking budgets and stated that upon completion, it will be 'one of the largest hospitals in the Community'.
The expansion will increase the bed capacity by 70%, from the current 270 to 457. Additionally, four new operating rooms, new delivery rooms, a day surgery unit, and enhanced critical care areas with more ICU beds and hemodialysis stations are planned.
This initiative complements ongoing measures, such as the upcoming launch of twelve prefabricated medical consultation units and the addition of 188 healthcare staff positions to reduce waiting lists. Expansions are also planned for nearby health centers in Los Montesinos, San Miguel de Salinas, Guardamar del Segura, La Loma, Pilar de la Horadada, and Orihuela Costa.
The renovation will occur in three phases over five years. Phase I, with an investment of 87.4 million euros, will improve healthcare capacity, providing 457 operational beds, a new specialty center, and 150 outpatient clinics. Phase II (34.4 million euros) will reconfigure the existing building, expanding the surgical block. Phase III (27.4 million euros) will complete the complex with 1,370 parking spaces.
The staffing increase involves 667 new professionals, with 404 hired during Phases I and II, and the remaining 263 during Phase III. The estimated annual cost for this workforce expansion is 25.9 million euros. New hires will cover all necessary categories, from specialist physicians to administrative and physiotherapy staff.
The Generalitat emphasizes that the combination of increased space, technology, and personnel will lead to shorter waiting lists, improved patient comfort, and adaptation to the demographic and seasonal growth of the region.
