The Ontinyent City Council plans to resolve the award in November and begin the work before the end of 2026, aiming for a portion of the new spaces to be operational during 2027. The Councilor for Territory, Óscar Borrell, positively assessed the participation of six companies, from the Valencian Community and Murcia, with experience in similar projects in other municipalities.
Borrell explained that the process is currently in the technical report evaluation phase, after which the economic offers will be opened. The goal is for the works to commence in December, once the contracting process is completed. He emphasized the importance of the companies' experience to ensure compliance with sanitary mortuary regulations in the construction of prefabricated niches.
The project, designed by architect Silvana Soler, includes the construction of patio 5 in the eastern area of the cemetery, covering 3,975 square meters. It will feature 1,068 niches and 440 columbaria, along with facilities such as restrooms, a small office, a storage room, and a waste area. A parking esplanade and connection to the existing parking are also planned, along with infrastructure for water supply, sewage and rainwater collection, lighting, and other services.
This expansion is part of a broader plan initiated with the acquisition of two adjacent plots of 17,000 and 13,300 square meters between 2022 and 2023. These lands allow for a progressive expansion of the site and ensure sufficient space to meet burial needs for at least the next 200 years.
