Concepción Square in Ontinyent now features new urban furniture installations aimed at providing shaded areas and cooling the environment during periods of intense heat. These additions have been implemented as the recently planted trees in the square's renovation grow and mature, offering broader natural shade.
The prototypes, created by the local Ontinyent studio Odos Design, incorporate seating and a misting system. According to council sources, the initiative addresses a detected need to improve the square's usability, offering an integrated solution that complements the growing trees. The goal is not to replace the trees' shade but to provide comfort during the time they need to fully develop.
Each modular element consists of several "petals" that collectively form a shaded zone. The initial units installed comprise three such modules and include seating areas. The misting system is designed to help reduce the perceived temperature during the hottest times.
These first two elements are serving as a pilot test. Ontinyent City Council will evaluate their performance and public use before deciding on potential expansion within the same square or their implementation in other public spaces across the city.
