The Ontinyent City Council has organized a mental health awareness event for high school students, combining the screening of the documentary “Relatoras de vida” with direct testimonies to foster understanding and break down prejudices.

First-year high school students from Pou Clar and Jaume I institutes and La Concepción and La Pureza schools gathered at Ontinyent's Sala Gomis for a mental health awareness activity. The event, linked to the celebration of World Mental Health Day, saw high attendance.
The activity included the screening of the documentary “Relatoras de vida,” promoted by the Spanish Mental Health Confederation. Afterwards, two of the participating actresses joined via video conference to share their project experiences with the students, answering their questions and offering firsthand insights into their lives.
The session concluded with a panel discussion featuring users from CRIS-ADIEM (a rehabilitation and social integration center specializing in mental health) and SASEM (a municipal program for the follow-up and care of individuals with severe and chronic mental health problems). They shared their experiences, the role of these resources, and the importance of support.
“

"It has been very enriching for the young people to hear these individuals firsthand and see that they have their own lives, projects, and capabilities, just like anyone else. Learning about these experiences helps dismantle preconceived notions and understand that a mental health issue does not define a person."

Paula Soler · Councillor for Policy for People
Paula Soler, Councillor for Policy for People, emphasized the importance of overcoming the stigma surrounding mental illnesses and normalizing seeking help. She drew a parallel between the need for medical attention for a physical problem and the need for help with a mental health issue, stressing the importance of treating both situations with the same understanding and naturalness.
Soler highlighted the relevance of these awareness initiatives among young people, as contact with real testimonies fosters empathy, a more informed perspective, and the creation of safe environments to discuss mental health without fear of judgment or discrimination.
