The period between July 19 and 23 has left very high thermal records in numerous stations of the Valencian Association of Meteorology (Avamet). The maximum temperature of the episode occurred in Villena, where the thermometer reached 45.1 °C, a figure very close to the absolute record previously registered in La Pobla Llarga.
The most critical aspect of this heatwave has been the combination of heat and humidity. In places like Sumacàrcer, the heat index exceeded 63 °C on Thursday the 23rd, a figure described as unprecedented. Furthermore, coastal areas such as Sueca and Gandia have suffered relative humidity levels above 95%, which prevents the human body from cooling down properly.
Nights have also been especially sweltering. In Alcoi and Benidorm, minimum temperatures have provided no respite, exceeding 28 °C for several days. This situation has prevented the population from physically recovering from the high daytime temperatures.
Thursday the 23rd was the day of greatest intensity, with twenty municipalities exceeding 43 °C. Additionally, the influx of humid air favored the appearance of heat bursts in regions such as Baix Segura, Vinalopó Mitjà, and Alacantí, with wind gusts exceeding 90 km/h.
