The Directorate General of European Funds has confirmed the allocation of 8,550,000 euros to the Sueca City Council. These funds, from the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER), are part of the specific call for the EDIL DANA Plan, aimed at local entities affected by the meteorological catastrophe of October 29, 2024.
According to Sueca's mayor, Julián Sáez, the funding will drive the construction of the planned storm tank and the comprehensive separation of the sewage network for rainwater and wastewater. This key action will prevent the collapse of the sewer system during torrential rain episodes by effectively separating water types, thus protecting the urban center and the municipality's natural environment.
Other funded projects include the creation of a new emergency management room and the renovation of the vehicle fleet, uniform and rescue equipment, transmission technology, and digital management systems, to enhance resilience against the effects of climate change.
The smaller local entities of El Perelló and Mareny de Barraquetes will also benefit. Hydraulic permeability and transversal drainage will be improved on the CV500 road, and the pedestrian walkway connecting El Perelló and El Perellonet will be rehabilitated. In Mareny de Barraquetes, facilities and heritage will be restored, including the monumental garden and the sidewalk of Cap d’Irta street, along with improvements to rainwater runoff from Platja del Rei.
The municipal government team has hailed this award as "a historic success that will enable the transformation of the municipality's water infrastructure, providing a definitive and structural response to a long-standing citizen demand and increasing the climate resilience of the urban environment".
The European aid of 8.55 million covers 95% of the projects, which total 9 million. The city councils of Sueca, El Perelló, and Mareny de Barraquetes will cover the remaining 5%, amounting to 450,000 euros. The projects are scheduled for execution between 2026 and 2029.
