The president of the Provincial Council of Castellón, Marta Barrachina, highlighted the 800,000 euro investment made by the provincial institution during the current term to boost rural security. This service, provided by rural guards, seeks to prevent theft and vandalism on agricultural farms, particularly in depopulated municipalities.
Barrachina emphasized that agriculture is a fundamental part of the province's tradition and identity, stressing the Provincial Government's commitment to preserving the primary sector. "It is essential to strengthen security and promote agriculture, especially in depopulated municipalities," stated the president, who underscored the need for administrations to support farmers with policies that foster opportunity creation.
The rural guards service was implemented in 2024 to ensure the protection of the countryside and prevent thefts from farms. The Council currently provides aid to 15 municipalities with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants to enhance surveillance. The president recalled that in the previous call, the budget was increased by 50%, reaching 300,000 euros, and the criteria were expanded to include towns with up to 5,000 inhabitants.
According to Barrachina, rural guards are a "key element" supporting the work of those who cultivate the land. She added that "every euro invested in rural areas is an investment in the future, in employment, and in sustaining the life of our towns," as this funding line promotes employment and contributes to rural development and population retention.
