“"We are facing a strategic project for the city, designed to significantly increase our response capacity to intense rainfall episodes. Algemesí has orographic characteristics and a sewer system that necessitate more evacuation options and greater drainage capacity. Therefore, this new outlet to the Magro River, along with the anti-pollution tank, the floodable park, and the renovation of the main pipelines, will represent a qualitative leap in the municipality's protection with works that will be fundamental for Algemesí's future."

The Algemesí City Council has initiated the technical work for an ambitious €44 million project aimed at reinforcing the urban drainage system against torrential rain episodes.
The comprehensive action includes the construction of an anti-pollution tank, a new rainwater outlet towards the Magro River, a floodable park with a capacity of 180,000 m³, and the renovation of the arterial sewage network. The works are expected to be tendered during 2027, once the project design is finalized.
Currently, Algemesí, a practically flat town with a combined sewer system, evacuates excess rainwater towards the Xúquer River. The new project aims to expand this response capacity with a second evacuation alternative towards the Magro River, allowing excess water to be diverted depending on rainfall intensity and water levels in both rivers.
One of the key infrastructures will be an anti-pollution tank with a capacity of 16,000 m³ to collect the initial rainwater, which carries the highest pollutant load. Subsequently, excess water can be evacuated to the Xúquer via current collectors or directed towards the Magro through new large-capacity pipelines. For this latter option, a pumping station with eight pumps will be built.
The project will be completed with the renovation of the urban drainage arterial network, significantly increasing the pipe sections to handle larger volumes of water during rain events.
