The Utiel Town Hall Square was the scene this Monday, September 21st, of a rally for World Alzheimer's Day. Mayor Ricardo Gabaldón, along with council members, the educational community, and residents, showed their support for the Association of Relatives of Alzheimer's Patients of Utiel (AFA Utiel).
As a gesture of support, students from local primary schools held up green cardboard hands, symbolizing the disease's visibility. The Utiel City Council also joined the day by illuminating the municipal facade in green.
“"This year we raise our voice for an issue that can no longer wait. In 2025, Europe authorized two new treatments capable of slowing the progression of Alzheimer's in certain individuals in the very early stages of the disease. They are not a cure. They are not treatments indicated for everyone. But, after more than a century without a therapy capable of acting on the course of the disease, they represent progress and, above all, an opportunity. An opportunity of incalculable value: TIME… Because when we talk about Alzheimer's, TIME IS NOT A NUMBER: IT IS LIFE. From the 41 associations that make up FEVAFA, we demand commitment, planning, equity, and responses."
The central moment was the reading of the official manifesto, promoted by the Spanish Alzheimer Confederation (CEAFA) and the Valencian Federation of Associations of Relatives of People with Alzheimer's (FEVAFA), to which AFA Utiel and the council adhere. It calls for specific and coordinated care for Alzheimer's and other dementias, as well as advancements in early detection and public funding.
The manifesto also emphasizes the need for comprehensive care beyond medication, recognizing the needs of patients and caregivers, and institutional support for the associative movement.
Mayor Ricardo Gabaldón acknowledged the daily efforts of AFA Utiel, highlighting its fundamental role not only for Utiel but for the entire region. "This difficult disease not only affects the people who suffer from it, but also their families and loved ones, so it is essential to give them all our support," he stated.
Under the slogan "No longer is the answer no", Utiel reaffirms its commitment to visibility, research, and the defense of dignified and equitable care.
Throughout the week, AFA Utiel has organized various awareness activities. On September 23rd, there will be an information desk at the Municipal Market. On September 24th, the House of Culture will host the workshop "Music and Alzheimer's". The program will conclude on September 25th with the Ordinary General Assembly of AFA Utiel.
