The municipality of Baix Maestrat experienced an unusual event during the celebration of festivities honoring its patron saint. The fountain of the Virgin, located in the Pla de la Mare de Déu and recognized as one of the most emblematic heritage elements of Sant Mateu, suffered considerable damage.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, amidst the scheduled bullfighting events. After a morning with activities like the traditional breakfast and the 'cagà del manso', the day continued with bullfighting and a communal meal. In the afternoon, bulls from the ranch La Paloma, from Xaló (Alicante), were introduced.
During one of these moments, one of the bulls could not be properly controlled and strongly impacted the fountain. The impact caused the fracture of the monument's central structure, surprising attendees. The Gothic image of the Virgin and Child, which crowned the fountain, also fell to the ground and was split in half.
This event has generated comments among residents, given the fountain's historical importance. Documented since the 14th century, the fountain of the Virgin (formerly known as the fountain of Santa Maria) bears similarities to the Fuente del Ángel in the main square and was surrounded by six Tuscan columns that once supported a canopy.
This unexpected occurrence will mark this year's patron saint festivities, leaving an unusual image on one of Sant Mateu's heritage symbols.
