On September 21, 2026, the Spanish Energy Club (Enerclub) organized the conference: “Energy Supply Security in an Uncertain Geopolitical Order”. The event, supported by Iberdrola and Repsol, brought together experts to discuss the changes in the energy sector.
At this meeting, José Planelles, representing the Technological Center, shared the institution's experience in strategic energy research. Planelles participated in the panel discussion titled: “The Energy Sector Facing a New Security Paradigm: What Has Changed?”, offering insights into current challenges.
According to Enerclub, recent international events, such as those related to Ukraine and the Strait of Hormuz, have placed energy security at the center of the geopolitical agenda. The energy transition is no longer seen solely as a measure to reduce emissions but also as a key element for Europe's strategic autonomy, sovereignty, and economic competitiveness against other global powers.
The conference highlighted that current crises act as catalysts for the energy transition. The need to strengthen the commitment to renewable and indigenous sources to reduce external energy dependence was emphasized. However, it was cautioned that there are no single solutions; security is achieved through a combination of various technologies, diversification of origins and suppliers, and the defense of industrial capacity.
An increase in renewables, electrification, grids, and storage is anticipated, which will need to coexist with fossil fuels for years to come. To maintain social support for the transition and capitalize on the associated industrial opportunity, managing and containing energy costs is a priority. Therefore, having comprehensive long-term strategies and a stable framework that incentivizes the necessary investments is considered crucial.
