The 18th season of the Orange Market in Castellón de la Plana is about to commence. The Department of Agriculture and Environment met with farmers to prepare for the campaign, which will start on October 18th. Key aspects discussed during the assembly included the operating schedule, set selling prices, and the necessary requirements for participation in the Fadrell, María Agustina, and Pintures de la Gasulla market squares.
The Councilor for Agriculture, Gonzalo Romero, emphasized the market's significance as a direct meeting point for local producers and consumers. He highlighted how this initiative allows farmers to sell their quality, locally-sourced harvest, thereby supporting the city's agricultural activity. Romero expressed pride in reaching the 18-season milestone, acknowledging the efforts of the founders and all participating farmers, as well as the trust of the buyers.
This year's campaign will launch on October 18th. The established prices are 1.50 euros per kilo for oranges and mandarins, and 2 euros per kilo for grapefruits and lemons. The season is expected to run until May, depending on the farmers' fruit availability. The market will operate every Sunday, with exceptions for holidays such as La Magdalena or during the Christmas period.
Interested farmers must submit an application and a declaration of responsibility. This documentation requires specifying the desired selling square (Fadrell, María Agustina, or Pintures de la Gasulla), identifying their plots and crop varieties, and certifying ownership. Registration mandates compliance with regulations, including being registered with REGEPA, offering fruit in good condition, and holding a food handler's card. The application period will open the day after the official bases are published in the Official Provincial Gazette and will close 30 days before the market concludes. Documentation should be submitted at the Municipal Agricultural Services, located at 16, Lledó Avenue.
To commemorate its 18th anniversary, the Orange Market will host a special event on Saturday, November 21st, at the Agrarian Chamber. The following day, Sunday, November 22nd, three orange trees are scheduled to be planted in Fadrell Square.
