The gathering, part of the World Mental Health Day commemorations, brought together experts such as psychiatrist Alberto Gadea, along with technical teams from SASEM and representatives from associations like ASAME and AFEM Marina Baixa. The aim was to address key aspects of mental health, with a special emphasis on the fundamental role of families in the recovery process and the need to also care for those who provide support.
The participatory space allowed for raising questions, sharing coexistence difficulties, and exchanging practical tools. The Councilor for Health, Marisa Cortés, highlighted the importance of these dialogue forums, emphasizing that mental health support must include the environment of the affected person. "Families also need information, support, and spaces where they can express themselves and feel heard," stated Cortés.
Cortés stressed the municipal commitment to dispel ignorance and prejudice surrounding mental health, promoting natural, respectful, and empathetic conversation. She valued the collaboration between administrations, professionals, entities, and families to build a more informed and prepared community. "No one should feel alone when facing a mental health situation," she added, thanking all those involved for their participation.
The initiative reaffirms the Council's commitment to mental health prevention, awareness, and care, aiming to eliminate existing stigma. During the event, a manifesto was read, advocating for combating the isolation of people with mental health problems, recognizing their active role in the community, and focusing on youth and children, especially in light of challenges arising from technology use.
