The Marina Alta region has witnessed another unusual meteorological event. Following a small tornado in Calpe, Xàbia has experienced a tide surge or meteotsunami that caused a sharp drop in sea level.
The strong currents generated in the Canal de la Fontana have necessitated the closure of the northern section of El Arenal beach to swimmers. A red flag has been hoisted, and warning signs have been placed to ensure the safety of beachgoers.
Images captured by Lucas Bisquert clearly show the sea level's descent, indicated by the wet stones on the walls marking the usual waterline. The force with which the Mediterranean waters are entering the canal is also evident.
In these types of tide surges, the sea may unexpectedly recede from the shore only to return with considerable force. The video confirms that this Wednesday's surge was not as intense as the one experienced last Monday, when the phenomenon was more severe.
