The debate over Posidonia management continues in Dénia. Residents from l'Almadrava and now Les Deveses are expressing their dissatisfaction with the large amount of aquatic plant debris that the sea deposits on the sand.
Locals point out that the beach is covered with these 'wash-ups' and complain that collected specimens are being piled up at one end, near the L-shaped jetty that borders the regenerated section of Les Deveses. This jetty, located near Riu Deva street, separates l'Almadrava and Les Deveses beaches.
The Dénia City Council rigorously applies strict regulations on Posidonia, based on the Best Practices Manual approved by the Generalitat Valenciana in May 2024. This manual specifies where, when, and how this plant debris can be removed.
Restrictions are greater on beaches classified as natural, such as Les Deveses. In these areas, Posidonia removal is generally not permitted, although screening does occur. However, in the strip closest to the shore, the wash-ups must remain, as Posidonia acts as a natural protection against coastal erosion.
This situation affects five beaches in Dénia considered natural: in addition to Les Deveses, also the rocky coves of Les Rotes, Punta del Raset, Les Marines (from Boga street to Mussola street), and Els Molins.
In contrast, controlled removal of Posidonia is permitted on common urban beaches like Marineta Cassiana and l'Almadrava (from Riu Girona street to Riu Gallinera street) between March 15 and October 31. Similarly, on urban beaches with restrictions such as Les Marines (from Mussola street to Barranc de l'Alter), Les Bovetes, and l'Almadrava (from Riu Gallinera street to Riu Grande street), it can be removed between June 1 and October 31.
