An agreement reached past 2 AM between the workers and the concessionary company, Acciona, has allowed the indefinite strike to be suspended. The strike had caused unrest among residents and tourists. The situation, especially in peak August with high temperatures, had led to an accumulation of garbage causing bad smells and discomfort.
The mayor, Ana Sala, announced the agreement, which was the result of over 15 hours of negotiation. Workers were demanding a 15% salary increase applicable over three years. It has not yet been disclosed whether the company has fully accepted this demand, and the specific details of the agreement will be known throughout the day. It will also be determined if the local council, which actively participated in the negotiations, will assume part of a salary increase not initially included in the contract.
The strike, which began on August 6th, has been officially called off. The mayor thanked the "good disposition" of all parties involved and the "efficiency" of councilman Álex Coca, who has been responsible for the garbage service for a few months.
The local council had already considered sanctioning Acciona for failing to meet minimum service requirements and had requested the Ministry of Health to declare a state of unsanitary conditions to enable the hiring of extraordinary cleaning services.
