The coastline of Dénia has registered the hatching of 128 sea turtles over a weekend. The majority, 80 specimens, emerged from a nest located on Les Deveses beach, which had not been found until now. The remaining 48 specimens hatched at the Turtle Camp on Les Albaranes beach.
On Friday afternoon, the hatching of the first controlled nest took place in Les Albaranes. After the birth of an initial hatchling, 30 more followed. Of these 31, ten were transferred to the Oceanogràfic and the remaining 21 were released into the sea. Two volunteer divers recorded the moment of their release with underwater footage, a rare recording.
Subsequently, 17 more turtles hatched in Les Albaranes, which were also released. In total, 48 turtles were released on Friday. Another video shows these animals at the moment of their birth and running towards the shore.
The main surprise came on Saturday night with the hatching of a second nest in Les Deveses, which had not been located. People walking on the beach detected the 80 hatchlings and contacted the Turtle Camp. Members of the Marine Zoology Unit of the University of València and the Oceanogràfic went to the area to help seventy of them reach the sea. The remaining ten were sent to the Oceanogràfic for monitoring.
With these hatchings, there have now been five sea turtle nests recorded in Dénia during this summer season.
