Less than five months before the start of the European Athletics Indoor Championships, scheduled from March 4-7, 2027, at the Lluís Puig Velodrome, and during the week of October 9th, Valencian Community Day, the medals have been unveiled. The design, conceived as a tribute to the city, its history, culture, and people, features a large 'V', symbolizing victory and Valencia, adorned with floral motifs from the silk of Fallera dresses.
The Councilor for Sports, Rocío Gil, recalled that the championship returns to the city after more than 20 years, placing Valencia back on the international athletics map. She emphasized that with these locally-designed medals, Valencian identity and traditional culture will be more present than ever in a special edition, prepared with effort over three years.
Designed by The Medal Company, the medals move away from the traditional round shape to become a sculptural piece that unites athletics, with the curves of the track, and Valencian tradition, represented by the Fallera dress. The semicircular silhouette is derived from a combination of the event's graphic identity and the shape of a Fallera's comb, while concentric curved lines evoke the layout of an athletics track.
The central element is a large 'V' that diagonally crosses the medal, representing Victory and Valencia. Engraved above it is the year 2027. The name Valencia and the championship logo occupy other areas of the piece.
The floral pattern adorning the 'V' replicates the typical fabric of Fallera dresses, the embroidered and brocaded silks that have been part of the city's heritage for centuries. To translate this textile to metal, the design team identified four key elements: the curved branch, the main flower, the small details, and the texture, reinterpreting them to ensure legibility and proper production.
The medals will be plated in gold, silver, and bronze, with the same design for all three metals. The reverse, with a smooth surface, incorporates the European Athletics logo and an area for engraving. They will hang from a blue ribbon featuring the championship's imagery.
The presentation coincides with the week of October 9th, the day Valencians commemorate King Jaume I's entry into the city in 1238 and the birth of the Kingdom of Valencia. Valencia 2027 aims for its medals to carry this identity across Europe, mirroring its official slogan, 'Ignite the Track,' which originated from the Fallas celebrations.
