The initiative, funded by IVACE+i with FEDER funds, builds on the previous work of the OASIS project, expanding the focus to sustainable packaging production and the implementation of digital tools to improve traceability and transparency throughout the value chain. Unlike OASIS, which addressed legislative aspects and circular economy principles in recycling, VERSO focuses on developing reuse systems and the practical application of the DPP.
According to Sonia Albein, lead researcher in Circular Economy and Environment, the project addresses the need to overcome technical, legal, and market challenges in the plastic packaging sector. The goal is to offer replicable solutions enabling companies in the Valencian Community to enhance their competitiveness and move towards more sustainable production models.
VERSO integrates an ecodesign approach based on the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) methodology. This methodology allows for the assessment of environmental, social, and economic impacts, as well as sector-specific risks, to develop more durable, reusable, and recyclable packaging, optimizing its entire lifecycle and prioritizing waste prevention.
The project includes the validation of new reuse systems and the development of models for the efficient application of the Digital Product Passport, which provides traceability and transparency for each package. It collaborates with ITC Packaging and RECICLAMÁS, contributing expertise in packaging manufacturing and post-consumer waste management.
Results include the design of packaging aligned with reuse criteria, a roadmap for sustainable packaging management, the application of the SSbD approach, and the pilot implementation of the DPP. Good practices for the entire product lifecycle have also been developed, with an emphasis on waste prevention.
To transfer the findings, AIMPLAS will host a final workshop on September 29th at its Paterna facilities. Solutions for reusable packaging, DPP advancements, and recyclability will be presented, fostering experience exchange among sector stakeholders.
