The primary goal of this environmental intervention is to increase shade and reduce climate impact, as reported by the council. The renovation, which has already provisionally opened traffic lanes, is nearing its final stages.
This premise of generating more shade was crucial in drafting the final project, which is part of the municipal plan to increase urban green spaces. Pilot tests have already been conducted, such as the installation of awnings in Spain and America squares.
The municipal government is maintaining this approach in other projects, like the upcoming renovation of San Agustín square, which will include 308 square meters of pergolas and the planting of 69 new trees to create shaded areas.
The Giorgeta-Pérez Galdós project plans to plant 644 trees and create over 6,800 square meters of green spaces. Specific solutions have been designed to promote tree development and generate effective shade.
Trees in hard pavement areas will be planted in large tree pits, some of which will be continuous and vegetated to enhance ground-level greenery. These pits will be filled with shrub species and a layer of shredded pruning waste to conserve moisture.
The project's documentation also includes tree alignments on both sidewalks. On the east sidewalk, an alignment is planned to provide shade for the projected bike lane and pedestrian traffic. The central median will retain the existing Washingtonia robusta trees and be supplemented with new species.
The work also incorporates a new irrigation system, divided into eleven sectors and 54 sub-sectors, with different irrigation types depending on the area (gardens, planters, and tree pits) to ensure adequate supply for the new green spaces.
