The Micalet of Valencia Cathedral offers the opportunity to closely experience one of the most emblematic traditions of Valencian culture: manual bell ringing. This art, recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, has set the rhythm of the city since the Christian conquest.
Through several guided tours, attendees can ascend the bell tower, observe how the bells are rung by hand, and learn about the different types of traditional ringing, such as repics (peals), voltejos (swings), and the corbisbal.
The tours will take place during various festivities between August and September and require prior reservation. Visitors must be present 30 minutes before the ringing at the Cathedral's model, located in the Plaza de la Reina.
The ringing schedule includes dates such as August 10th at 6:00 PM for Sant Llorenç (ringing type: Repret), August 14th at 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM for L'Assumpció de Santa Maria, September 7th at 7:00 PM for the Vespra de la Nativitat de Maria, and September 13th at 7:00 PM for Santíssima Creu.
This initiative represents a unique opportunity to understand the language of these instruments and appreciate their value as cultural heritage.
Among the traditional ringing types explained are Repret, characterized by a slow rhythm; Volteo, which produces a powerful sound as the bell swings; Vol de 3 o 5 parades, a variation with pauses; Cor Bisbal de la Maria i Repic, combining the main bell with a rapid peal; and Repic, an agile and rhythmic ringing without swinging the structure.
