Spain led the race during the first half of the course. Luca Hoek delivered his leg in first place (47.44), followed by César Castro (48.2). Miguel Pérez-Godoy regained the lead before handing over to Sergio de Celis, who secured fourth place overall with a new Spanish record (3:11.91). Hungary took gold, followed by Russia and Croatia.
In addition to the men's relay result, the day was positive for Spanish swimming with several swimmers qualifying for Friday's finals. Iván Martínez Sota broke the Spanish record in the men's 50m backstroke (24.40), securing his place in the final. Meanwhile, María de Valdés (16:18.54) and Ángela Martínez (16:22.43) qualified in seventh and eighth position, respectively, for the women's 1500m freestyle final.
In other notable events, Italy's Sara Curtis broke the world record in the women's 50m backstroke (26.56), winning gold. In the men's 100m butterfly final, Milak broke the European record.
