The Valencia City Council held a minute of silence this Friday to remember the 43 people who died and the 47 who were injured in the metro accident that occurred on July 3, 2006, as well as their families and loved ones. The ceremony took place at midday.
The Mayoress, María José Catalá, stated that "it was appropriate to make this gesture that we have made as a corporation," and expressed the council's "most absolute respect" and "remembrance" for all those who lost a family member or loved one.
Catalá highlighted the City Council's declaration of mourning, with flags at half-mast in all municipal facilities, and noted that work has been done with "absolute respect and collaboration" with the Association of Victims of the Metro Accident of July 3, 2006 (AVM3J) to restore the monument in memory of the deceased.
The Mayoress indicated that the monument, which was in "a state of great precariousness," has been rehabilitated in time for the tribute. She added that the council will continue working in the area around the memorial to address the association's requests.
Regarding the association's desire to continue these acts, Catalá emphasized that she has "no problem attending to all their demands" and that work will continue with "absolute tranquility, serenity, listening to their requests" throughout the next year.
The Mayoress underscored her "totally respectful attitude" and her "sensitivity" towards the situation, personally knowing "many families" affected and individuals who died in the incident. She assured that she will always respect the will of the association and the victims' families, and confirmed her readiness to attend events with them.
