Vehicle age is a key factor in this non-compliance. Cars that attend the ITV inspection after the deadline are significantly older. While those that comply have an average age of 15.2 years, this figure rises to 19.3 years for vehicles with over a year's delay.
The percentage of vehicles with an unfavorable result also increases with the delay. If within the deadline the rejection rate is 15.2%, it rises to 25.1% for those that have gone over a year without an inspection.
Melilla tops the list with a 55.2% non-compliance rate and the oldest vehicle fleet (18.1 years). Following the Valencian Community (48.4%) are Ceuta (47.9%), Balearic Islands (41.4%), Basque Country (38%), and Canary Islands (36.2%).
Guillermo Magaz, managing director of AECA-ITV, has warned that delaying the ITV inspection increases the risk of road accidents, injuries, and fatalities, as well as a potential negative impact on air quality.
