The Valencian Government has awarded initial works to enhance the performance of the air conditioning units at Valencia's Central Market, addressing high temperatures and humidity generated by the building itself. The interventions, set to begin next week and last for two months, aim to mitigate the effects of climate change and the high volume of visitors.
The project, which has received authorization from the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage, focuses on improving the heat exchanger system. A permeable grille will be installed in the central freight elevator, beneath the dome, to facilitate the upward flow of cool air from the basement and reduce water condensation. This measure, proposed by the UPV (Polytechnic University of Valencia), is the first step in lowering the building's overall temperature.
The contract has been awarded to the company FOVASA for 47,212.15 euros (VAT included). The Councilor for Commerce and Markets, Santiago Ballester, emphasized that this investment is part of the municipal commitment to modernizing markets, improving conditions for vendors and citizens, and ensuring heritage preservation.
This initiative is part of a broader investment exceeding 5.2 million euros dedicated to modernizing municipal markets since 2023. Other markets, including Algirós, Jerusalén, Rojas Clemente, Ruzafa, and Torrefiel, have also received upgrades to their air conditioning and energy efficiency systems.
