During the week of August 17-23, the Valencian Community recorded 96 deaths related to high temperatures. This figure marks this period as the second deadliest week of the summer in the region, according to estimates from the Daily Mortality Monitoring System (MoMo) of the Carlos III Health Institute.
Since the beginning of summer on June 21, the MoMo system has attributed a total of 458 deaths to heat in the Valencian Community. The most critical week was July 6-12, with 104 deaths, followed by the most recent week with 96.
In August, 166 deaths associated with high temperatures have been recorded. Of these, 58 occurred in the first half of the month and 107 between August 16 and 23, coinciding with the latest intense heat episode. Nationally, during the 34th week of the year, 668 heat-related deaths were registered, 96 of which were in the Valencian Community.
Provincial data indicates that 40 of these deaths correspond to the province of Alicante, 31 to Castellón, and the remainder to Valencia. The report also notes that the majority of the 96 deceased individuals were over 65 years old, a particularly vulnerable group.
Friday, August 21, was the day with the most heat-related deaths in the Valencian Community, with 19 fatalities. Saturday, August 22, followed with 17, and Thursday, August 20, with 16. Analyzing the entire summer, July 10 was the day with the highest number of deaths, at 22.
Compared to the previous year, heat-attributable mortality has increased significantly. Between June 21 and August 23, 2025, 350 deaths were recorded, while in the same period of 2026, the figure has risen to 458.
