The Castellón Provincial Council has begun the development of its Road Crossing Plan, an initiative that foresees interventions in 64 municipalities across the province. Vice-president and Head of Infrastructure, Héctor Folgado, highlighted that the plan seeks to enhance accessibility and reinforce road safety for pedestrians on interurban road sections that pass through urban centers and are owned by the Council.
With an initial investment of 7 million euros planned for 2026 and 2027, the plan prioritizes pedestrian safety over vehicles in urban and peri-urban conflict zones. It also aims to improve accessibility for the elderly and people with reduced mobility, as well as to enrich the road environment with urban furniture such as benches, bins, and vegetation, thereby creating more welcoming spaces in the towns.
In the first three months since its presentation, actions have already commenced in the crossings of Torás, el Toro, Barracas, Xert, Tírig, and Higueras. Furthermore, during September, works will begin in La Torre d’en Doménec, Gaibiel, and Atzeneta del Maestrat. Héctor Folgado recently visited the works in Gaibiel and Atzeneta, explaining that the projects include pavement improvement and the construction of single platforms for pedestrians and vehicles.
The vice-president emphasized that these improvements will boost mobility, safety, and sustainability in the crossings and access routes to the municipalities' urban centers.
