The 2026/2027 school year kicks off tomorrow in Alcoy, marked by the recovery of a third nursery classroom for 3-year-olds at CEIP El Romeral. This unit, which the Generalitat intended to eliminate, has been successfully maintained thanks to joint efforts by the school, families, and the municipal government.
This academic year starts with approximately 15,100 students enrolled across all educational levels. Schools are hosting 1,363 students in Nursery, 3,381 in Primary, 2,767 in Secondary, and 643 in Baccalaureate, totaling over 11,700 students. This represents a growth of 290 students in Nursery and Primary and an increase of 110 students in ESO and Baccalaureate.
The university sector also shows positive figures. The Alcoy Campus of UPV surpasses 3,000 students for the first time, with 900 new entrants. The degree in Artificial Intelligence and the double degree in Chemical Engineering and Textile Technology and Design Engineering have been consolidated. The University of Alicante contributes 250 students, including the third year of the Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education Teaching at the Centre Cervantes. These numbers are complemented by Vocational Training, the Alcoy School of Design and Art (around 3,400 students), adult education, the School of Fine Arts, conservatories, the Senior University, and the Official School of Languages.
Throughout August and recent days, Alcoy City Council brigades have intensified vegetation clearing and cleaning efforts around educational centers. Extra work was needed to remove trees and walls damaged by the thermal shock on August 10th, which brought wind gusts exceeding 132 kilometers per hour.
The main educational challenge for this course is linked to the Edificant Plan. The goal is to complete the renovation works at IES Andreu Sempere as soon as possible, prompting demands for the Generalitat to pay its accumulated debt, which has already led to extended execution deadlines. Regarding this plan, two recent actions have been carried out with surplus funds at two centers: at CEIP Sant Vicent, missing windows in the kitchen and some departments were replaced, along with repairs to playground equipment and basketball hoops; and at the Official School of Languages, various repairs were made, notably to the cornice.
