The project, developed at the Alcoy treatment plant by Facsa and Fovasa, both firms of the Nealis group, has established a pilot plant that enables biogas production from wastewater using membrane technology. Furthermore, the resulting regenerated water can be used for street cleaning, green area irrigation, or factory cleaning.
According to Facsa, the results confirm that the model operates stably under real conditions, transforming urban and industrial flows into valuable resources. The project has successfully produced quality regenerated water, generated biogas from organic matter, and reduced sludge production, reinforcing the role of treatment plants as key infrastructure for more efficient and circular water management.
These advancements are particularly relevant for regions with strong industrial activity, such as Alcoy, as they improve water utilization, reduce impacts, and promote a model where the city and industry collaborate for more efficient use of available resources.
The project received funding from the European Union and collaboration from the Public Entity for Wastewater Sanitation of the Valencian Community (Epsar), which provided the Alcoy treatment plant for the development of the work.
